Bart is the only pear tree growing in a small backyard. Prized for his golden sweet pears makes Bart the center of attention. But when Bart awakens one spring from his dormant winter sleep, something unexpected waits.
The story of Bart is based on a pear tree in the author’s backyard that is more than 30 years old. For the last five years it has produced apples along with sweet Bartlett pears as a result of the author’s skill at grafting. The book includes tips on grafting (accompanied by pictures), with special comments for parents and children.
Bart was illustrated by three students from the IDEA Academy and College Preparatory in San Benito, Texas, the author’s hometown. They were winners of an art contest that the author ran through the San Benito News.
Bart won the Northern California Publishers and Authors’ 2014 award for Best Children’s Book as well as Honorable Mention for the book’s cover.
